The Magical Power of Distraction
There’s a method I’m using with great success at the moment, the method of distraction, which is a form of magic all its own. A person who is lying in a sick bed thinking about their illness, is going to suffer every bit of that illness. A person on a roller coaster is not going to feel any part of his illness. Unless he gets motion sickness, in which case… Okay maybe that’s a bad example. Did you ever notice that a great movie or book can make you forget you had a headache?

How To Be Happy Anyway
I think we all have. No matter what side of the political spectrum we are, everyone seems to be angry. And it’s contagious. I can’t turn on the internet or the television without getting angry. So I have to deal with that. Why not stay angry? Anger, you see, has ripples. It ripples outward and affects the people around us, the work we produce. Everything we touch becomes a match to anger, frustration, impatience, irritability. Anger ripples inward, too, and that affects our h

When Bad is Good
Last month, I applied for a coveted and highly competed-for spot in an advertising newsletter for one of my novels, and was turned down. When something unpleasant happens like that, it’s always a big fat message from the Universe, and that message is, “Here’s where your vibe is.” So I took a quick look at where I’d been focused. I’d been noticing business tightening up, and money getting short, and publishers not cooperating. This was the whole reason I applied for the ad. I

Bask and You Shall Receive!
'Here's what happened.' –Adrian Monk I had just finished meditating out by the pond, and I lingered afterward watching the koi fish, and thinking how much I love them. My inner voice said, Yeah. We’ve been basking in them a lot this summer. And I thought, that’s true, I have. I’ve been basking in these 6 beautiful fish all summer, just sitting out here appreciating them every chance I get, every nice day. And now they’ve doubled, My inner voice reminded me. That’s right, I re

Believe Your Way to Success
You'll Always See Proof of What You Believe When you have a strong belief, that belief is a magnet for things that match it. The best example of this in our culture came on May 6th, 1954 when Roger Bannister ran a mile in 3 minutes, 59.4 seconds. Up until then, a common belief was that humans were physically incapable of running a mile in less than four minutes. But since then, the under-4-minute mile has become so commonplace that even gifted high school athletes are achiev

Why Do Bad Things Keep Happening to Me?
Or, How to Poop Rainbows The answer is in the question. Bad things keep happening to you if you are the type of person who believes bad things keep happening to them. I’m going to give you some easy steps to change your beliefs, and when you follow them, you’ll become the type of person who poops rainbows, just like me.
