I discovered Daring brand at Wegmans, and my first thought upon using it was, "Damn. I should've bought more than one package!"
I am unequivocally in love with this product. It looks, feels and cooks up very much like the real thing, only better. Way better. The flavor is excellent. The package directions are perfect. Just add a small amount of oil to a skillet and sizzle the pieces for about 5 minutes on each side. (Sidebar from an author, I love that this company uses sizzle as a cooking instruction.) Then continue with your recipe. It doesn't get soggy in soups or stews and is tasty enough to eat with straight out of the pan.
After that basic cooking, which is done from frozen with no pre-thaw needed, you can shred the pieces, dice them, or leave them whole. The most challenging part of using the product is that it's hard not to eat it all before adding it to the recipe. Eminently nibble-able. And SO versatile. I made a chicken-lover's stew, spaghetti with(out) chicken. You can scatter the pieces on salads, use them in stir-fry.
Daring has straight up simple ingredients and the main two are soy protein concentrate and sunflower oil. If you read here, you know I try to keep oils to a minimum. However, this has so little that it only adds about 1/4 gram of saturated fat per serving. It's non-GMO, high protein, and plant-based. Here, see for yourself.
Shipping & Packaging
I ordered on a Tuesday morning, received shipment notification that same afternoon, and took delivery on Thursday afternoon. That's the fastest of any vegan product I have ordered by mail. That's faster than Amazon for me!
Because they are shipped frozen, the packaging is a little more than I like. Large box with insulated liner. However, they are working on finding better options for shipping. Here's their statement on that, straight from the site: "Good enough. A phrase not in our vocabulary. At Daring, we are constantly pursuing innovation and seeking to improve each and every element of our business. To that end, we are actively exploring better packing solutions—from insulation that’s both 100% made from recycled materials and 100% recyclable, to reusable boxes. Because just as we’re committed to delivering our delicious products to your door, we’re committed to doing so in the most sustainable and responsible way possible." –Daring.com
To reduce the impact from shipping, we can choose to buy the product in stores or buy it from the website in bulk rather than just a little at a time. Fewer boxes, less insulation, less fuel, and more Daring! It's a quadruple win.
Website and Customer Service
The website is a gem all by itself, with a nice recipe section that has my mouth watering just browsing through it.
A walk through the "Daring is Caring" section filled my heart. These are good people doing good things for our world, supporting just causes and putting their money where their heart is.
The team is very responsive on social in a friendly, positive and upbeat way. There is just nothing I have not liked about this company.
If I could ask for one thing, it would be for a little bit more personal info on the site. I'm so nosy, I'd like a headshot and mini-bio of the people behind the business.
"This product is a delicious, easy to use, healthy substitute for poultry that we just love. We believe products like Daring brand make it far easier for people to reduce or eliminate their meat consumption because they are a step up, not down. Better than meat! Daring plant-based chicken is officially a new staple for us." –Mags, EatLikeYouGiveaShit.com
We're planning a few more recipe creations using it in all its various flavors. Those that already exist are linked under related posts.
