Returning the Magic to Your Life (Magical Living Post 1)

I remember driving past the post office on my way home from grocery shopping, and thinking, “I ought to stop there.” And then just as quickly thinking, “why the heck would I want to do that?” Only to arrive home, check my rural mailbox and find a note from the Postmaster saying I had a package waiting to be picked up. One that needed to be signed for or was too big to fit in the mailbox (this happened numerous times.) Did anything like that ever happen to you? That was magic.

Did you ever start humming a song just before it came on the radio? Or think of someone just before the phone rang, only to find it was that same person on the other end? Or pick up the phone to call them and find they were at that very same moment calling you?

That was magic.

Did you ever find that a coincidence made a set of circumstances fall into place in a very unlikely manner that allowed you to do something you’d been wanting to do? That was magic. Did you ever make a wish on a birthday candle and have it come true? That was magic. The other day we were driving past the Whitney Point Reservoir where I’d seen a pair of eagles a year previously. I hadn’t seen them since, but I thought to myself, I wonder if I’ll see eagles today, and then looked out over the water as we drove past. (I wasn’t the one driving. That never stops me from gawking at birds, mind you, but this time I wasn’t driving.) When I turned my head to face front again, an eagle swooped right over the car. That was magic. I thought of it, I looked for it, and it appeared. Magic. When I first began my writing career, I joined a group of writers who met in Syracuse NY. I was sure I’d never get to a meeting, but thought I’d love the newsletters. I was a young mom who was scared to death to drive in the downtown area where they met, a whole hour from home. In fact, I only knew my way to one street in the greater Syracuse area. Tulip Street in Liverpool, where my birth father lived. I’d only recently met him, a nice reunion that fizzled and died when he vanished from my life (again.) But he was there for a reason. Shortly after I joined the Central NY Romance Writers, I got a newsletter telling me they had moved to a new meeting place. On Tulip Street in Liverpool.

That was magic. Things lining up in precisely the way they were meant to be. There is no such thing as coincidence.

On September 8th, 2001, I woke early to see a vulture perched on the fence around the pool. Being a bird nut, I ran for the camcorder, (an ancient one you had to put a tape cassette into) and in my jammies, crept outside to capture him. He opened his wings wide, fully an 8 foot span, and faced west. I was captivated, filming. My little bulldog, Wrinkles, was dancing around my feet barking, but the vulture didn’t move. He turned his head to look over his shoulder at me, as if to say, “Are you getting this?” I thought of how, in Wicca, when we open our arms toward a direction, we are opening the gates to allow the energy associated with that direction in to us. Opening the Western Gate is opening the pathway between life and death. This footage was taken 3 days before 9/11.

That was magic. It was not a warning. It was a matter of the animal behaving in a way that matched the energy that was in the atmosphere at that time. It was a matter of me being tuned in enough to notice, to pay attention, and to try to interpret what sort of energy the vulture was reacting to.

My life is filled with these sorts of events, every single day. Yours is too. You just need to start noticing them.

Get yourself a special blank book, a journal, so that you can begin recording your observations. Date each entry so you can go back and read the entries prior to major events in your life. You’ll begin to detect patterns, to understand the energies being shown to you in the signs of nature.

This is a good enough place for you to begin, in noticing the animal and bird world, where magic seems to abound. Next time, we’ll find some other places to look for and find the magic in your life.
