Watering Your Money Garden
Let’s talk money. You’ve read the last 3 posts: Doing What You Love for a Living Three Secrets to Success Nothing Worth Having Comes Easy and Other Myths So you’ve had a primer on Law of Attraction. We’ve talked about doing what you love. We’ve talked about being more joyful. We’ve talked about not complaining. We’ve talked about destroying the old myths that nothing worth having ever comes easily, when the truth is that it couldn’t be easier.

So let’s get practical and tackle the tough subjects one by one. How exactly do you go about bringing more money into your life? Let’s talk nuts and bolts. A few years ago, I was focused on (and therefore suffering from) lack of money. I avoided looking at my bank account. I would let bills sit unopened, because I knew I couldn’t pay them anyway. I wouldn’t even log onto my banking site because I didn’t want to see the low numbers in the balance. I neglected, neglected, neglected my financial situation. One day I was staring at my aquarium through a magnifying glass. At one point, I had been doing that almost every day, and more often than not, I found something new growing in my 90 gallon salt water world. Usually it would be a new

creature I’d never seen before, and I’d have to go online and look up images and try to find out what it was. During that time, my tank was thriving as it had never done before. But then I got busy, and I stopped looking every day. I kept on doing all the other stuff, feeding, adding various supplements, keeping the lights on a timer and the temperature right. I did all of that. But I hadn’t been sitting and looking. So this day, after a long time of not really looking at the tank, I got out my magnifying glass and checked things out. What I saw was shocking. Many of those tiny creatures who had appeared so mysteriously, were either withering and dying, or had vanished completely. The tank was definitely on the decline. It hit me that all the stuff I’d been reading, about how the things in our lives either thrive or wither according to the attention we pay to them, were absolutely true. And here was my proof. Attention and focus are like fertilizer and water to the gardens of our lives. When I looked at my tank every day, it thrived. When I stopped looking at it, it declined. Nothing had changed but my attention. That moment of clarity changed everything for me. I immediately realized I had to apply this new understanding to my finances, and that it could be applied to any and every area of my life that needed improvement. I realized that I could not attract money while feeling so fearful about it that I was refusing to look at it. If I’m avoiding anything to do with my money, I’m avoiding money itself. If I’m not looking at my money, it declines. Get it? I decided that no matter what the situation, I was going to open every bill when it arrived, open up my bank account program, and pay the bill if there was enough money to do so, put it aside if there was not, but pay it as soon as I could, but mainly, to pay attention: To look at my finances as closely as I had been looking at my fish tank. And I knew one other thing too. I knew that I had to look at how much money I had, not how much I lacked. I had to celebrate the bills I could pay and not stress about the ones I couldn’t. And more times than I would’ve thought, as I logged into that account day after day, any time a bill arrived, I found that there was enough to pay that bill. Even if I was sure there wouldn’t be, I’d find some deposit or other that I hadn’t expected. A rebate we’d sent in for a year ago. Refunds from bills I had somehow overpaid. One time a publisher wrote to say they had miscalculated royalties several periods back and they sent me several thousand to correct the error. That had never happened to me, in 22 years in the biz. Having enough to pay the bills and having proof positive that what I paid attention to would grow, was a huge change from my mindset of not enoughness. And then came the snowball effect. The more times I found there was enough to pay a bill, and felt happy and delighted, (and empowered!) about that, the more often it happened. And within very short order, I noticed there was always enough to pay each bill. And almost as soon as I realized that there was always enough, there started being a little bit more than just enough. And as soon as I noticed and celebrated that, the little bit more than enough started getting bigger.

I must reiterate here, I wasn’t doing anything else differently. I wasn’t working harder. I hadn’t discovered any new sources of income, although once I got my mindset about money into the vibration of abundance, all those things followed quite quickly. Suddenly, just with that tiny shift of my own focus, I was looking forward to opening my bank account and paying my bills. I was using mantras like, “All my bills are paid on time or early. I’m never late.” And it was true. With the extra that had appeared as if by magic, I decided to start paying double the minimum payment due on whatever debt I had with the highest interest rate. Then when that one was gone, double the payment on the one with the next highest rate, and so on. As the debts went down, there were fewer minimum payments to make, and the little bit extra got to be more and more extra. Within a year I had cut my credit card debt in half. Within two years, I had paid off nearly $50,000 in credit card and IRS debt and my little bit extra had grown into a lot extra. And the only thing I had changed was my mind.

By checking in with my balances regularly, allocating the funds in a way that felt responsible to me, I was focused on how much I had, and how many bills I could pay, and how much extra was left over, and all those things began to grow and kept on growing. Shift your attitude about abundance to everything you do have, every bill you can pay, and start managing it like you imagine wealthy people must do. Start paying more attention to your garden of abundance, and I promise you it will begin to grow. It’s no fun at first to force yourself to look at something that isn’t the way you wish it was. But I promise you, if you look at your finances with the attitude of finding (and appreciating!) the abundance you do have, and of making it grow with your loving and grateful attention, you will start to see results in almost no time at all. Next week we’ll discuss some of the things we get stuck on that can block true abundance and success. Until then, focus on what you have.
